Adaptation of Puerto Ricans to Connecticut after Hurricane Maria
The University of Connecticut, School of Medicine in collaboration with Family Life Education developed a project to document the needs of these displaced families with special emphasis on the impact of displacement on the emotional stability (estabilidad emocional) of heads of households.
Working in collaboration with the UConn’s Department of Medical Sciences (at the time the Department of Community Medicine) faculty and students and a group of Puerto Rican women who moved to CT after Hurricane Maria, Family Life Education conducted a Community Based Participatory Research Project (CBPR) to assess the impact of displacement on the emotional status of Puerto Ricans displaced by the hurricane and to identify the structural, familial and individual factors that contribute to or ameliorate emotional instability among this population.
